YouTube has revolutionised public engagement with science and mathematics. But are there problems with the perception of science education fostered by YouTube edutainment? Moriarty will discuss the lessons that educators and researchers can learn from viewer engagement with these channels.
He will also explore how students and academics together can deal with the deluge of misinformation, pseudoscience, and flat-out quackery that appears below the line of so many online forums. How can we reverse the slow death of expertise?
Philip Moriarty is a professor of physics at the University of Nottingham. His research focuses on prodding, pushing, and poking single atoms and molecules; in this nanoscopic world, quantum physics is all. Moriarty has taught physics for over twenty years and has always been struck by the deep connections between music, mathematics, and quantum mechanics. He is also enthusiastically committed to science communication, also via online channels as a member of the Sixty Symbols team who won the Institute of Physics’ Kelvin Prize in 2016 for “innovative and effective promotion of the public understanding of physics”.
